How to Put Videos onto Your iPod
The 5G or 6G iPods are able to play videos as well as music. I bought a 5G iPod classic of 30 Gigabyte. It is wonderful all the time, always being with me and let me freely enjoy the beautiful music and watch the movies or MV. When I first put the original videos or converted movies onto my iPod, I became very exciting and stayed up so late that night!

How to put videos onto your iPod? For many videos this is an easy task, assuming you have iTunes, but if your video is not supported the process becomes far harder.

Step1. About the Video Formats
You should know which formats your iPod supports. This is quite important, or you cannot put them onto your iPod. (H.264 and MPEG-4)

H.264
* Filename extensions: .m4v, .mp4, and .mov
* Video: Up to 768 kbits, 320 x 240, 30 frames per second (fps), Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3.
* Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 kbits/sec, 48 Khz, and stereo audio.

* MPEG-4
* Filename extensions: .m4v, .mp4, and .mov
* Video: Up to 2.5 Mbits/sec, 480 x 480, 30 fps, Simple Profile.
* Audio: AAC-LC up to 160 kbits/sec, 48 Khz, stereo audio.
* Note that these are the maximums, you can always create a lower quality video for your iPod.
* You need a .mov file.

Note: The fifth generation iPod can play H.264 (baseline profile only) and MP4. Videos such as TV shows, podcasts, music video, and movies may be purchased from online stores such as the iTunes Store, or download from Google Video and other converted sources, then imported to the iPod via iTunes software.

Step2. About Muxed
If your video plays on the iPod but no sound, this means you may have muxed sound or an incompatible sound format. When files are muxed, they contain interleaved audio and video tracks (they’re mixed together instead of stored in separate tracks).
Open the original movie file in QuickTime Player to find out whether the file is muxed or not:
1. From the Window menu, choose Show Movie Info.
2. Click the More Info disclosure triangle in the Movie Info window (if it is closed).
3. Note the entry next to “Format”.
4. If the format is “MPEG1 Muxed” or “MPEG2 Muxed”, the audio portion of your video file is incompatible with your iPod and iTunes applications, and with anything else based on QuickTime. There is not fix for this other than to use a third party application to convert all of the file

Step3. Convert video to iPod format with iTunes
1. Simple Shortcut Process: There are some websites on the Internet which allows you to download movies, sports, music videos and other videos for the iPod directly from their site for free after you pay a one time fee. The good thing about these websites is that the videos you download will already come in the iPod format. This means you do not need to rip or convert the videos which will save a lot of time. Just sign up, download and transfer.

2. Buy videos: Know that any video you buy from the Apple store is going to play in your iPod:
1). Download and pay for the video.
2). Connect the iPod.
3). Select the video for your iPod.
4). Sync your iPod.

3. Convert your video file to the correct format: Many third party software applications will convert DVD or video accompanying audio to the iPod formats.

1). Choose software for Windows: e.g.: Pavtube Video to iPod Converter.
Choose software for Macintosh: e.g.: Handbrake, originally a BeOS application has the simplest user interface.
2). Import correctly formatted video: Once you have videos from other sources in the correct format, import the correctly formatted video and audio into your iPod following these steps:
a). Open iTunes;
b). Select Movies;
c). Select File->Import to import the selected movie into iTunes;
d). Select the movie with a single click;
e). Select Advanced->Convert Selection for iPod (You can also right-click on the movie icon and select this option);
f). Select the new file created to sync;
g). Sync your iPod with iTunes.

Warnings
1. If iTunes produces an error message when converting your video to iPod format it means you did not use the correct format to import into iTunes. (I just convert AVI to MPEG-4/H.264 format which can not import into my 5G iPod classic, so I have to change to MPEG4.)
2. CSS is an anti-piracy scheme for DVDs that uses encryption to protect the disc's contents. In some countries, like the United States, you could be in violation of the US Criminal Code (Chapter 17, Section 1201) by taking video from your DVDs.

Tips
1. Just use the latest software version (iTunes) ; especially install the latest version of QuickTime.
2. If your video is muxed video, it will lose sound when you convert it with iTunes. For Mac user, iSquint can deal with muxed video.
